Ironically, the only faction I feel starts with the WRE/ERE feel is Dwarfs. Empire and Brettonia were perfect possibilities for “powerful and large, but beset by enemies on all sides,” and High Elves could have been a great start for “powerful and large, but unable to expand due to small armies.” Maybe in the third game they’ll implement this? Every playable faction in Warhammer 1 and 2 starts with exactly one or two territories, and have to expand from there. Older games had stuff like the Seleucid Empire (Rome 1 and 2), the two halves of the Roman Empire (Attila), West Seaxe (ToB), and others. Unlike older Total War games, you don’t have any starting positions in the “already massive empire, facing enemies on all sides” category. You know, this makes me realize something.
